About CIE

In order to qualify for entry to NZ universities, students must meet the standards approved by the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors’ Committee (NZVCC). Click here for details.

These standards apply to NZ citizens and residents. Different standards may apply for international students and these should be checked with individual institutions.

CI students must meet each of the following standards:

Numeracy Standard
Minimum grade of D in IGCSE Mathematics (or D grade in GCSE Mathematics or E grade in AS Mathematics).

Literacy Standard
Minimum grade of E in any one of AS English Language, AS Literature in English or AS Language & Literature in English.

General Standard

Minimum of 120 points on the UCAS Tariff (see table below) including a minimum grade of D in each of at least 2 subjects equivalent to those on the List of Approved Subjects, plus a minimum grade of D in one further subject either from the Approved List or related to a domain on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Students may include points from one additional CI subject to meet 120 points.

UCAS POINTS A* Grade A Grade B Grade C Grade D Grade E Grade
AS LEVEL N/A 60 50 40 30 20
A LEVEL 140 120 100 80 60 40

For the List of Approved Subjects CI students may include:

  • both English Language and Literature in English
  • Business Studies - it may be combined with either Accounting or Economics, but not both
Note: Students may use Standards completed in either CI or NCEA but the General Standard should be completed from only one system. Students who use CI for Numeracy and/or Literacy and NCEA for the General Standard should be aware that NZQA will not record them as having met the entrance requirement. In such cases, students should advise any NZ university to which they apply of their mixed qualification.
